چکیده

For indoor pedestrian navigation with a shoe-mounted inertial measurement unit (IMU), the zero velocity update (ZUPT) technique is implemented to constrain the sensors’ error. ZUPT uses the fact that a stance phase appears in each step at zero velocity to correct IMU errors periodically. This paper introduces three main contributions we have achieved based on ZUPT. Since correct stance phase detection is critical for the success of applying ZUPT, we have developed a new approach to detect the stance phase of different gait styles, including walking, running and stair climbing. As the extension of ZUPT, we have proposed a new concept called constant velocity update (CUPT) to correct IMU errors on a moving platform with constant velocity, such as elevators or escalators where ZUPT is infeasible. A closedloop step-wise smoothing algorithm has also been developed to eliminate discontinuities in the trajectory caused by sharp corrections. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Integrating Low Cost IMU with Building Heading In Indoor Pedestrian Navigation

This paper proposes an integration of ‘building heading’ information with ZUPT in a Kalman filter, using a shoe mounted IMU approach. This is done to reduce heading drift error, which remains a major problem in a standalone shoe mounted pedestrian navigation system. The standalone system used in this paper consists of only single low cost MEMS IMU that contains 3-axis accelerometers and gyros. ...

Rotating a MEMS inertial Measurement Unit for a foot-mounted Pedestrian Navigation

Pedestrian navigation especially indoors suffers from the unavailability of useful GNSS signals for positioning. Alternatively, a low-cost Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) positioning system that does not depend on the GNSS signal can be used for indoor navigation. However its performance is still compromised because of the fastaccumulating heading drift error affecting such a low-cost IMU senso...

Precision and Reliability Incensement of Inertial Navigation System with Rotation and Redundancy

Precision and reliability are two main performance characteristic in low-cost Inertial Navigation System(INS). Increase of precision in low-cost INS without auxiliary sensors is main challenge. Bias instability leads to position drift error in inertial navigation system. In addition, fault occurrence makes the sensor reliability is decreased. Rotation of Inertial Measurement Unit(RIMU) and use ...

Development of a Pedestrian Indoor Navigation System Based on Multi-sensor Fusion and Fuzzy Logic Estimation Algorithms

This paper presents a pedestrian indoor navigation system based on the multi-sensor fusion and fuzzy logic estimation algorithms. The proposed navigation system is a self-contained dead reckoning navigation that means no other outside signal is demanded. In order to achieve the self-contained capability, a portable and wearable inertial measure unit (IMU) has been developed. Its adopted sensors...

Integrated GPS/INS System for Pedestrian Navigation in a Signal Degraded Environment

This paper evaluates the performance of a shoe/foot mounted inertial system for pedestrian navigation application. Two different grades of inertial sensors are used, namely a medium cost tactical grade Honeywell HG1700 inertial measurement unit (IMU) and a low-cost MEMS-based Crista IMU (Cloud Cap Technology). The inertial sensors are used in two different ways for computing the navigation solu...
